M5 Hard Shoulder Kerb
BBMM the team responsible for Area 2 of the Motorway network, have had an ongoing problem with repairs to the existing, extruded asphalt hard shoulder kerb.
The costs of setting up an extruder for what was relatively minor repairs was prohibitive, and they were therefore looking for other options in the form of alternative kerbing products.
Their wish list, was to find a product that matched as closely as possible the profile of the extruded kerb i.e. splay, and could be installed quickly and efficiently.
The speed and simplicity of the installation process was of paramount importance, along with the product availability, due to the inherent problems and costs associated with Motor -way lane closures.
As a belt and braces solution additional Scan adhesive was used in the form of Scan Strip on a one to one basis with the kerb. Usually used as a packer the Scan Strip helped provide better adhesive contact between the kerb base and prepared substrate, therefore reducing the preparation time prior to installation. To complete the work, concrete was poured between the kerb and the safety barrier.
Scan Kerb is a reinforced concrete stick down kerb which has Highways Agency approval under (section 1101 paragraph 2 of Highway works). Manufactured to BS EN 1340.
The standard A1 kerb (splay profile) is delivered to site with the adhesive pre bonded to the underside of the kerb, the only preparation is to sweep the highway to remove dust and debris, prime the pre-marked kerb line with Scan coat, and bed the kerb in place, in cold weather it may be advisable to heat the road surface and underside of kerb to help speed up the adhesion process.
Area 2 have been using Scan Kerb since Dec 10 they have installed over a 1000 kerbs, 800 strips with over 100 litres of Scan Coat.
The key factors effecting the choice of Scan Kerb on this project, was the short term lane closures, and the speed of installation. The lack of excavation and plant requirement, and Scan Kerb availability, enabled the contractor to complete this project on time and to the satisfaction of the client and client’s agent.
Project completed March 2011.
